Maria Asumpta entering Plymouth

Painted from direct observation, seen from a friends flat

Maria Asumpta was at the time the world's oldest sailing square rigger.

Built in Spain Maria Asumpta was 11 years older than the Cutty Sark (permenently conserved at Greenwich, London).

The artist knew both Maria Asumpta and Cutty Sark, has exhibited onboard Cutty Sark and voyaged on Maria Asumpta.
