The Golden Fleece is a myth, a legend or a reality?

The enchanting story is deeply rooted in our rich culture.

The Greeks would as Greeks do, have us believe their account of the Greek heroes, Jason and his companions in sworn search for the magical, mythical Golden Fleece.

Jason and the Argonauts galley was named after it’s builder Argo.

This sturdy vessel carried ‘Jason and the Argonauts’ into adventures that challenge credibility and certainly on a voyage to eternal fame.
Or perhaps the story really began with a merry Greek storyteller with a fondness for wine, a vivid imagination and a ready audience?

Jason and the Argonauts has become a classic story which is are the subject of several Hollywood films ( https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_et_les_Argonautes_(film,_1963)) and numerous books.

Would you like to get as near the truth as anyone can?

Tim Severin did.

With a lively interest in mythology and in archaeology and while on vacation in the Aegean islands he noticed that the legend of Jason and the Argonauts included information that looked to him very much like sailing directions.

Being Anglo Irish Tim Severin naturally had a galley built, a small one, using 13th century methods, assembled his own crew of heroes and set off.

What he proved still makes septics very uncomfortable.

Tim Severin shows us with his film and his book ‘The Jason Voyage’ (ISBN 0 09 161880 0 published 1985 by Hutchinson & C, London) no ancient stories should be dismissed as myth.

Some are myths, most especially the grandest tales those such as The 10 Plagues of Egypt, Odysseus, The Exodus, Masada, King Arthur and his knights, have a factual basis.

This painting is a salute to the remarkable Tim Severin, to Jason and the Argonauts and an aid to all who retell the fascinating 13th century BCE story of Jason and the Argonauts.
