This unique La plage de la mine d’or is my favourite beach in Brittany.
That is a hard choice as many Brittany beaches are outstanding.
This week storm Nils is making the beach into a dangerous place with strong winds, big seas and as if that is not enough, serious flooding inland.

La plage de la mine d’or of Pénestin is a little out of my ‘family area’ but not a very long drive by car and spectacular.
La plage de la Mine d’Or has this name because there was gold mined there before WW 1.
The story says there is gold in the sand but not in sufficient quantities to justify extraction.
I saw how the cliffs take the hues of the precious metal at sunset, very noticeable as I could see one autumn when sailing a yacht to the nearby river Vilaine.
The cliffs date back to the Quaternary period the most recent 2.6 million years of Earth’s history and are unique on the Atlantic coast.
Perhaps we can agree La plage de la mine d’or is of exceptional beauty with gold in its sand, much natural life among the rocks, frequented by seals and the upstanding cliffs are exceptional?
