Painting dhows

This beautiful lively marine painting, ‘Pirates !’ shows men and dhow engaged in an ancient trade.

Dhows with their very long ancestry, have seen more adventures than there are in Arabian Nights; and are still used by Somali Pirates!

Piracy, slavery and oppression are on the increase today.

Congratulations the author for having the courage to tell this story and for narrating it so very well.

 

His podcast describes an extreme Muslim slave raid which were common along the western shores of Europe, from Spain to Cornwall and Ireland.

There is a very dark side to the story of Islam that many people prefer to hide.

 

To say a million Europeans enslaved by Muslims is probably a gross underestimate. My own research suggests that is likely the lowest estimate.

This is a story you can easily research for yourself using the Internet and books.

 

Islam was very quick to embrace the cruelest forms of slavery including mass castration of males and the murder of mixed race babies born to African women.

Jews and Hindus invariably fared worse than Christians.

Jews native to Israel were routinely ‘culled’ during the Muslim occupation; the proofs are there for those with eyes to see.

 

The worst crime in all human history is the long, long story of the Arab African slave trade.

African practiced slavery on fellow Africans long before the first Portuguese and Spanish ships appeared off the coasts of Africa.

Europeans rarely went inland to find African slaves.

I’ve seen evidence myself on James island, in The Gambia river.

 

Most English were never comfortable with slavery, even the Doomsday Book (of 1086) shows us that.

The British were the first people in all Human history to declare “enough” and ban slavery, please God bless them for that.

 

They began by freeing slaves in their Empire.

The British went on to inspire other nations, and to spend a huge fortune and the lives of many sailormen to suppress slavery world wide.

The most noble achievement of the British Empire.

Great Britain has never been thanked, Britons have never been thanked, much less reimbursed for setting that example.

When the early Portuguese explorers, traders, men like the famous Vasco de Gama, driven by the king, “Henry the Navigator”, and wishing to spread Christianity, courageously pioneered the route round the Cape of Good Hope, they were the first Europeans to enter the Indian Ocean.

They received a mixed reception on the East African coast and at sea often found themselves under attack by Arab pirates using dhows.

The more strongly built more modern Portuguese Carracks and Caravels simply shot the relatively fragile dhows to pieces.

The ‘upshot’ of that was dhows began to be improved.

Many dhow builders copied and adapted what their crews and builders thought they saw in the superior Portuguese ships.

Today you can still see dhows built and echoing their Portuguese influence, most notably in the Bagalah variations.

Dhows,  vessels built by a methods of very ancient origin.

Some types with planks sewn together, a method we know from tombs, was used by ancient Egyptians, for example the Sanbec types, built by the same methods used with ships found in tombs of Pharaohs’.

Although leaky, the technique produces a flexible hull well suited for sheltered waters and taking the ground when handling cargos.

Other types, relatively more sturdily built were ocean going, voyaging extensively in on the Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, Red Sea and we think at times, as far as China.
