Plymouth City Council in it’s ‘wisdom’, had decided a number of historic abandoned vessels, wrecks and a swing railway bridge should be demolished.
Hence a race against time with a doomed Cornish lugger and an artist.
The Boat Breakers is one of a series of paintings, all sold except this one, which I painted during a grey February as an experiment.
I wanted to follow up on my studies of colour made at The Painting School of Montmiral the previous summer, to see how much colour I could find with my odd colour vision on a dull day.

Hooe Lake which takes it’s name from a village founded by Saxons, on the shore of the lake, is short walk from my then home at Radford Park [Plymstock] and is a fully tidal Hooe Lake.
Stories and legends about this tidal lake are many and varied.
Dolphin lake, this title goes back to days when marine pollution and over fishing were not problems.
In days of yore, dolphins which still abound around Plymouth Sound, used to drive large shoals of mackerel into Dolphin Lake.
As the tide ebbed the hapless mackerel would panic.
As the mackerel tried to escape through the narrow entrance to the lake the dolphins would feed at their leisure.
Hooe lake today is a pleasant backwater, good for a stroll including around the adjoining Radford Park and very good for two nice pubs, one being on the quay of Hooe Lake.
