A new painting produced in utmost secrecy to be a surprise 80th birthday gift.
Home for a marriage, with Liverpool on her stern.
A secret, successful commission, 40,5 x 61 cm (16” x24”) of Hector, a Blue Funnel Line H class cargo liner and a formidable challenge for me too as the artist.
About ‘Hector’s Homecoming’ : My client wrote to me, I’m based in Singapore … I came across your site on the internet and was wondering whether you can help me ? My father is turning 80 in July and I am desperately trying to find a painting/print of his first ship. He sailed from Liverpool in 1961 on the Blue Funnel Line ship ‘Hector’.
As for setting it can only be Liverpool, my father’s home town and where he both sailed from and returned to in those days.
A painter’s challenge.
Hector’s Homecoming, the painting detail below is particularly note worth as a painting because it shows several ‘brush’ and ‘palette knife’ techniques being applied simultaneously to produce a truly painterly result. A ‘painter’s touch’, a result A I is yet to achieve.
Sea paintings for sea people, smell the salt air, taste the briny water.
I’ve visited Liverpool many times and many of my earlier paintings appeared as centre page spreads in the seaman’s essential pocket journal, ‘Sea Breezes’.
I’ve always enjoyed my connections with the Ocean Steamship Company (Blue Funnel Line).
I asked myself can I, many years later produce a new painting half the size and as good or better quality than my much apprecited ‘Nexus at Liverpool’ painted for British Telecom Marine as a gift for the compant that converted the ‘Nexus’ into a cable lay and repair ship?
As with my painting of C S Nexus for BT Marine, ‘Hector’s Homecoming’ includes the world famous Liver buildings and Watergate Street as the background.
At that period, 1961, many distinguished shipping companies had offices in Watergate Street and the seafarer’s popular journal Sea Breezes was nearby.
The tug shown in ‘Hector’s Homecoming’ is the ‘Brocklebank’.
Brocklebank is typical of her period and by happy chance she is now preserved by the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
Also and not least, a Mersey Ferry, again, a vessel as used in 1961 and as made famous by The Beatles and by the romantique ‘pop’ song « ferry cross the Mersey ».
Of the many ships I’ve painted on the Mersey with Liverpool as background included are Mauretania, Talthybius, Robert L. Holt, and for British Telecom Marine, the C. S. Nexus, to name just four.
Nexus was rated particularly successful and chosen by my new client to be the inspiration for this new painting of the Hector.
It was after seeing paintings like these that Sir Robin Knox-Johnston asked to meet me which in turn lead to our now world famous painting « Roaring Forties » and two other’s of my paintings owned by Sir Robin.
This background will undoubtedly add both interest and value to this splendid new painting.
