"Cowes Week", 35 x 24 cm (14" x 9½"), £1,200 (about €1,400) by Gordon Frickers.

An exquisite Cowes Week painting, an unrepeatable painting made on location as the event unfolded and with a very royal connection.

Painting on location, a Cowes Week Regatta with “Yeoman XXVIII” at that time owned by the Aisher family racing with Prince Phillip at the helm.

Painting at Cowes Week, one of the oldest and most famous regattas. This 35 x 24 cm (14″ x 9½”) painting is one of a series made during ‘The Week’. The painting was created on location as the race you see here was progressing and completed before the race finished. As the yachts passed the Royal Yacht Squadron clubhouse and Cowes Esplanade, I sketched them using a graphite pencil and noted their colour schemes. Then I added each yacht to the painting.

By chance, the leading yacht which went on to win, was helmed by no lesser person the Prince Phillip, the Queen’s husband, The Duke of Edinburgh.

This is one of three paintings I made of Prince Phillip racing that week. This and one other are safely stored in my stock room. Priceless good luck? 🙂 Partly yes, partly planning, I knew that Prince Phillip was helming his friend’s Sigma 38 class yacht that week so I ‘lay in wait’. Priceless or not this painting has a modest price and is an excellent investment, a perfect painting with a very Royal connection.

Prince Phillip in particular has made a considerable contribution to Cowes Week, not only its’ ambience but also its organization.

Hence this beautifully executed painting of Royalty relaxing with Friends,  Cowes Week Regatta, “Yeoman XXVIII” at that time owned by the Aisher family racing with Prince Phillip at the helm.

It is very unlikely I will paint again on location at a major regatta.

Cowes Week is THE major Regatta of the British summer

seen here on a typical British summer’s day!

Cowes Week has been the world’s premier regatta since long before the Schooner “America” raced there and won the cup which is now the most famous trophy in sailing and known as The America’s Cup.

More than a good ‘party trick’ to amaze onlookers and race contestants this painting was created as one of a series due to the invitation of Paul Bertie of Ocean World West Cowes.

Paul. Bertie saw some of my work displayed at Queen Anne’s Battery Marina, Plymouth so asked me to visit and watch Cowes Week and to sketch what ever appealed to me.

From his favourite study, this painting, he commissioned a 20″ x 32″ version of this sketch, a full on painting for his office.

Like the man said, “souvenirs of a great week, a typical English summer day,  and a fine spirited painting”.

Paintings by Gordon Frickers here is a typical endorsement

12.December 2022 « The painting arrived well wrapped and no worse for wear related to the journey. It is even more beautiful in person than online. I love the texture and the use of light. It will be treasured by us as a memory of a great trip and will be the highlight of Morgan’s Christmas morning”.
Endorsement by kind permission of John J. Hogerty, II

Gordon Frickers is one of the very few artists invited to created a one man show of (35) paintings (May 2011) at the European Parliament, Brussels, an impressive addition to his list of exhibitions in other prestigious venues in Britain and Europe.
