Mermaid’s Pool, Kynance Cove, Cornwall 60.15 x 46 cm (24″ x 18″) 975 £, is a beach some say, the most beautiful cove in all Cornwall; I’d not disagree. I’ve visited many times including with my family hence this painting.
Kynance Cove near The Lizard, adding to it’s mystery and cleanliness, is not accessible when there are Spring Tides. Mermaid’s Pool is even less accessible and is by local legend, frequented by mermaids. The pleasures an fun of Mermaid’s Pool include the table rock, cliff jumping and a stunning underwater garden with a Mermaid’s tunnel to swim through out into the bay.

Gorran Haven, Cornwall, art for art’s sake, marine and landscape painting combined, a spontaneous study made from the pier of an active sea to see what would result.
This is Beach painting experiment, asking myself “what will happen if I use only what I see as the fundamental colours? “Every painting should be an experiment” said John Constable. I usually keep this quotation in my mind.
I had no clear idea of the result because I have very unusual colour vision, so this is the question I was asking myself and I certainly did not have selling the painting in mind. Despite the risk of a mess, the result is very pleasing and appropriately this painting is a watercolour.

Impression of a strong gale blasting into Fowey Harbour, painting made on location, a precious gem of a painting.
I sheltered in the ruined Polruan block house, still got wet and cold… triumphant though, so much knowledge gained.
While painting an angler on his way home looked and said “you’ve made a right bloody mess of that”.
He went home cold with no fish.
I went home with this oil sketch, photographs and new knowledge that led directly to several new paintings quickly sold an example of which is below.
